Happy New Year IT Pack Members!
We spent a lot of 2018 and 19 in post-acquisition pain and have worked a long, long time in effort toward consolidation / reduction in duplicative systems and processes. We'll be spending 2020 kicking off a series of "cleanup" initiatives. Taking pride in doing the un-sexy work of getting things standardized, up-to-date and built for scalability. It takes focus and it doesn't push the business forward so it's a little bit of a tough-sell but eliminating technical debt is must-have activity for a thriving business.
It was suggested that I should answer my own question. That said, my New Year’s resolution for 2020 is to listen better. I know this is one area I can improve. We search hard to find and hire great people. But a lot of us don’t focus on listening to them after we have them on board. There is a lot of advice online how to improve this skill. I found several key takeaways that I am going to try and hold onto. They are focusing when someone is talking to me. Allowing others to finish before responding. Learning to repeat what you are being told. And finally, asking more questions when people are talking to me, including the powerful “Why?” question.
I believe that great leaders are also great listeners. So 2020 will be my year to improve this very important and often overlooked skill.
